The first year of college can be a whirlwind of new friends, knowledge, and experiences. While the fall semester is coming to a close, students can come back recharged and ready to tackle what the spring semester brings. Here are some tips for what I wish I knew as a first-year student.

  • Ask for help! Whether you’re struggling with material in a class, need your RA to smooth things over with a roommate, or you’re seeking a new way to get involved on campus, just know that it is never a bad time to ask for help. The University of Arkansas has resources to support all of our students, but especially those navigating their first year.
  • Stay committed to your classes: it can be hard to stay focused towards the end of the semester. The final push through the end of the semester can be the most rewarding. Keep going and finish strong!
  • Step outside of your comfort zone and try something new! The first year on campus is a great time to sign up for student organizations and take advantage of new opportunities. Find new ways to fill your time. You are never too old to find something new to be passionate about.
  • Experience Fayetteville! We have the gift of being in a fun community atmosphere at the U of A. Get out and explore your new city. Find your favorite places to eat off campus or your favorite off-campus spot to study. When your family comes to town, they’ll want to experience these places with you.

Get involved in programs designed for first-year students! If you’re unsure where to start, reach out to New Student & Family Programs and we can help you find a fit on campus.
