Jasmine Dennis has been selected as the Student Leader of the Month for October. Originally from Ashdown, Arkansas, Jasmine came to the University of Arkansas to double major in History and African & African American Studies. She currently involved in multiple student organizations including Students Advocating Stronger Sisterhood (SASS), Black Student Association (BSA), Sankofa, and the Student Alumni Association (SAA). Jasmine has stated that a large reason she became so involved was to meet people from different backgrounds and really make a change in her community.

When asked what she thought a leader’s most important qualities were, Jasmine said, “I believe two of the most important qualities of a leader are being able to communicate effectively as well as being passionate about whatever you’re the leader of. Having great communication skills allows for your team to know exactly what they are doing to make the organization run as smooth as possible. By being passionate, you are therefore putting your best work into whatever you’re focused on. This passion will showcase in your outcome and will also allow for whom ever you’re leading to appreciate your hard work and dedication.” Jasmine identified Jasmine Blakney, a mentor, as someone that has made a significant impact on her experience by stating that “Even though she was only supposed to mentor me for a year she has become a person I can go to for anything. We are so much alike that I feel we were meant to be paired together. I came to college and not only found a life-long mentor but a life-long sister.”

Jasmine’s advice to other leaders is that “being a leader is not only about giving orders but also listening to those around you to better connect with those around you.” Her favorite quote is “I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice”

The Student Leader of the Month award, sponsored by New Student & Family Programs, recognizes University of Arkansas undergraduate students for their excellence in leadership through campus involvement, leadership activities, or through volunteer and community service.  More information about the award can be found here.
