OLLI: The Wonderful World of OZ

In 1900, L. Frank Baum published the first of a long series of children’s novels set in the fictional land of Oz. Since its initial appearance in children’s literature, the land of Oz has gone on to inspire numerous different iterations in a variety of mediums. As the classic 1939 film based on Baum’s original novel celebrates its 75th anniversary, it has become readily apparent that this land of fantasy is deeply embedded in the American consciousness and proves its longevity year after year. This course will discuss the ongoing relevancy of Baum’s work in popular culture, as it continues to be reinterpreted and reinvented for new audiences and generations. The history of the “OZ” franchise will be reviewed along with comparison of Baum’s original with its revisionist incarnation, Wicked, by Gregory Maguire. Both books are included in cost of class.
