Floating Lines- Interdisciplinary Student Art Exhibit

University Programs will host the exhibit Floating Lines, created by the students of the Computer Numerical Control course on January 21- February 14, 2014 in the Anne Kittrell Art Gallery at the University of Arkansas Union. The exhibit is open Monday thru Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be a reception Wednesday, January 22 from 6- 7:30 p.m. in the Gallery.

            This event is free to current University of Arkansas Fayetteville students who pay the student activities fee. Students must show ID for entrance. Admission for general public and non-fee-paying students is contingent upon seating availability and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis after fee-paying students are admitted.             For the average person, lines are merely marks and movements on a page; however, it is not a challenge to extend these forms into the three dimensions. Through computer software a line can be augmented to achieve forms unparalleled by what is possible to the human hand alone. Specifically, the CNC router removes material with a cutting tool as it follows the lines through space, in order to materialize in a tangible surface. The designers focus their efforts on the line and the paths it will take, placing fewer restrictions on what the machine can achieve alone. Through this software, the achievements of the human hand with the complexity of the machine can form art. This show is the work of an interdisciplinary course, with students from Mathematics, Computer Science, Architecture, and Philosophy. The class explored different ways in which lines can be registered on a computer and then manipulated. The variety of skills of the students enabled us to work with the whole process from the conceptual design, through the theoretical consideration, to the implementation on the machine. University Programs invites you to enjoy the results. The artists featured in this exhibit include Cassie Travaille, Derick McCollum, Edmund Harriss, Isaac Volpe, Joseph Fantinel, Josh Nunley, Madison Sandig, Rachel Loerts, and Travis Spikes.
