Ko-ko-ci Chapter of the AAS Meeting

February 11, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Kokoci Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society meeting on February 11, 2014 will feature James Zimmer-Dauphinee, a masters Anthropology student at the UA. Under the guidance of Dr. Ken Kvamme. James will discuss the methods, progress and results of his ongoing thesis research at Toltec Mounds Archaeological State park, home to the tallest surviving prehistoric mounds in Arkansas. Despite decades of archaeological research at and surrounding the park, very little is known about the internal structure of its two largest mounds. The importance and size of these earthen structures renders traditional excavation and geophysical methods ineffective or impossible. Therefore in the spring of 2013, a geophysical method known as Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) was used to penetrate the depths of the mounds and for the first time, offer some clues as to what they may contain. This presentation will discuss the results of this survey and other geophysical research and how they contribute to our understanding this important site. The meeting is held at the Arkansas Archeological Survey building, 2475 N. Hatch Ave., Fayetteville (off Garland Ave., across from Agri Park and next to the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Arena). This event is open to the public. Contact Marilyn Knapp at 479-575-3557 for more info.
