Eta Sigma Phi: Beta Pi Chapter’s Guest Speaker Dr. Rebecca Resinski giving a lecture on “”Midas, His American Daughter, and the Spectacle of the Golden Touch: A Look at the Myth of Midas in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Wonder Book, and Two Recent Picturebooks.”The Lecture will be in the Giffels Auditorium, at 7:00pm on Thursday, February 6th.
There will be a reception to follow at Ella’s in The Inn at Carnall Hall.
This lecture will focus on Midas: Ovid’s Midas, both the golden touch episode and the ass-ear episode and how strange and un-straightforward they are, along with Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Midas (with the now nearly canonical introduction of Midas’ daughter) and two picturebook versions of the story (one which takes its cues from mostly Ovid, and the other mostly from Hawthorne, but both picturebooks introduce further twists and have to navigate visual challenges).
This lecture would not only appeal to all students studying History, Classics, and Literature, but Childhood Education as well!
This event is free to current University of Arkansas Fayetteville students as supported by the Associated Student Government through the Office of Student Activities and funded by the Student Activities Fee.
